Free dump days in LA County: what's actually free

Roundup events, S.A.F.E. Centers and free curb pickup

The short answer

LA County's free one-day events are household hazardous waste and e-waste roundups, run by County Public Works with participating cities. They don't take general trash or furniture. For furniture and other bulky items, most cities offer free curb pickup a few times a year through the city or its trash hauler.

Free for LA County residents. They take products labeled toxic, flammable or corrosive, old electronics, batteries, cleaning supplies and certain light bulbs; solar panels aren't accepted. Dates and locations rotate, so check the CleanLA calendar or call (888) CLEAN-LA.

Free every week: S.A.F.E. Centers

The City of LA's S.A.F.E. Centers take the same kinds of household hazardous waste and e-waste, free for City of LA and LA County residents, most on weekends. See household hazardous waste drop-off for all seven.

Free for furniture and bulky items: your city's curb pickup

Most cities in LA County pick up couches, mattresses and appliances from the curb for free a few times a year. Bulky item pickup by city lists who runs each program and how to book.

Free for mattresses

Bye Bye Mattress sites take mattresses and box springs at no cost. See free mattress drop-off.

Everything else

Trash and furniture dropped at a landfill or transfer station are charged, often with a 1-ton minimum. Compare sites in the LA and Orange County dump directory, or have us haul it, starting at $190: see junk removal.
