Office cleanout: a Roa crew member loading cubicle frames and desk panels into the dump trailer

Taking junk to the dump yourself: rules and fees

Who's allowed in, what to bring, what it costs

The short answer

Before you drive to a dump, check three things: whether the site takes the public or only residents, what proof of address it wants, and its minimum charge (many LA County sites charge a 1-ton minimum). Cover your load, since uncovered loads cost extra, and bring a safety vest where the site requires one.

  • Orange County landfills: public self-haul temporarily closed

OC Waste & Recycling says general-public self-haul disposal is temporarily closed at Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha because of picketing near the sites, and compost self-pickup is closed too. Commercial haulers are still being served. Frank R. Bowerman never takes public loads. Check the updates page before you drive out.

Before you go

  • Check who can use it. Some sites take the public; others take only residents of a city or wasteshed, or commercial haulers only.
  • Bring proof of where the waste came from when the site asks for it: Orange County landfills want an OC driver's license, a utility bill or a contract showing the address.
  • Cover or tarp the load. Several sites charge extra for uncovered loads.
  • Bring safety gear where it's required: a vest at the Puente Hills MRF, a vest and hard hat at CLARTS, and a vest, hard hat and work shoes at Sunshine Canyon.
  • Expect a minimum charge. Many LA County sites bill at least 1 ton, even for a small load.

  • Scholl Canyon Landfill

    We use this one

    Landfill · Glendale · Open

    Residents only

    Takes:
Solid waste generated within the Scholl Canyon wasteshed; Clean dirt (criteria apply; call 818-243-9779); Clean asphalt; Green waste
    Address:
3001 Scholl Canyon Road, Glendale, 91206
    Hours:
Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM; Saturday 8:00 AM-3:30 PM; closed Sunday and major holidays
    Minimum charge:
1-ton minimum applies except tires and special handling (LACSD tipping-fee page)
    Covering your load:
Uncovered loads capable of producing litter: $5.40 per ton or per load
    Who can use it:
City of Glendale ordinance limits disposal to waste generated within the wasteshed: the cities of Glendale, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino and Sierra Madre; unincorporated Altadena, La Crescenta and Montrose; the unincorporated area bordered by San Gabriel, Rosemead, Temple City, Arcadia and Pasadena; the unincorporated area immediately north of Arcadia and Pasadena; and the unincorporated area immediately north of San Marino bordered by Pasadena. (Restriction is by origin of waste; the page does not specify an ID document.)
    Phone:
    (818) 243-9779 (number given for clean-dirt criteria); LACSD Solid Waste: (562) 908-4288

Only clean dirt gets the dirt rate here. Dirt mixed with trash or debris is charged as trash; we've paid about $105 a ton for that. That's what we paid, not the posted fee: call the landfill to confirm current rates.

Expect a 30-minute to 1-hour wait depending on the time of day. 12 to 2 PM is usually the busiest.

Rules change. Check the city or county page before you rely on a limit, fee or date.

Taking junk to the dump yourself: rules and fees: questions

Do I need to tarp my load?

Cover it. Several sites charge extra for uncovered loads (Sunshine Canyon lists a penalty per untarped load), and the City of Whittier requires every load at Savage Canyon to be covered.

What's the minimum charge at a dump?

Many LA County sites charge a 1-ton minimum. Orange County's public landfills price small loads by vehicle instead. Check the site's fee table.

Can I use a dump in a city where I don't live?

Some sites limit use to residents: Savage Canyon is for City of Whittier residents only, CLARTS for City of LA residents, Scholl Canyon for its wasteshed, and Orange County landfills for waste from Orange County.
