Dumps and landfills in LA and Orange County

Who can use each one, hours, fees and status, with sources

The short answer

This directory lists 36 landfills, transfer stations, hazardous waste centers and other drop-off sites in LA and Orange County, from their official pages. Some take loads from anyone, some only from residents of a city or area, and some only from commercial haulers. Filter by county or type, and open a site's page for its rules and fees.

  • Orange County landfills: public self-haul temporarily closed

OC Waste & Recycling says general-public self-haul disposal is temporarily closed at Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha because of picketing near the sites, and compost self-pickup is closed too. Commercial haulers are still being served. Frank R. Bowerman never takes public loads. Check the updates page before you drive out.

  • Chiquita Canyon Landfill is closed to waste

Chiquita Canyon in Castaic has not accepted waste since January 1, 2025. It is still managing the landfill's elevated-temperature reaction. CalRecycle's permit listing still says Active/Permitted, which describes the permit, not public access.

  • Puente Hills Landfill closed in 2013; the MRF at the same entrance takes self-haul

Puente Hills Landfill closed on October 31, 2013. The Puente Hills Materials Recovery Facility at the same entrance (13130 Crossroads Pkwy S., City of Industry) takes self-haul loads Monday to Saturday, 4 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where our loads go

Sites marked “We use this one” are where our crews take loads. Scrap metal from our jobs goes to SA Recycling (Monrovia, Carson, Pasadena, Santa Ana and other locations).

Rather not make the trip? We load it, haul it and handle the dump run, starting at $190. See our hauling service or junk removal.

Dumps and landfills: questions

Which LA County dumps take loads from anyone?

On the official pages we checked, Sunshine Canyon Landfill, Puente Hills MRF, Athens Irwindale MRF, Downey Area Recycling and Transfer Station (DART), Crown Recycling (Sun Valley) and California Waste Services (Downtown LA) take loads from the public. Others take residents of a city or wasteshed only, and some take commercial haulers only.

Can I take junk to a dump in Orange County?

Orange County's public landfills only take waste from Orange County, and you may need to show proof of where it came from. Huntington Beach Transfer Station also takes self-haul loads. Check the notices on this page before you go.

Do dumps take paint or chemicals?

No. Landfills and transfer stations don't take household hazardous waste. Take it to a household hazardous waste center or a County roundup event.

Why do some dumps have a 1-ton minimum?

Several LA County sites, including those run by the Sanitation Districts, charge a 1-ton minimum, so a small load costs the same as a ton. Check each site's fee table.
