The short answer
An old toilet can go out with City of Los Angeles bulky pickup, which lists toilets and sinks as accepted, but many other cities treat bathroom fixtures as remodel or construction debris and refuse them. Glendale and Fountain Valley list cast-iron bathtubs as not accepted. For a whole bathroom's worth of fixtures and tile, a transfer station that takes construction debris or a hauler is usually the realistic route.

1. City bulky pickup: depends on how your city files fixtures
The deciding question is whether your program counts a toilet or tub as a household item or as remodel debris. A few LA County examples:
- City of Los Angeles (LA Sanitation): toilets and sinks are on the accepted bulky item list, with unlimited curbside pickups at no added charge for single-family homes and small multifamily buildings on City service. Book through MyLA311 at least one business day before trash day.
- Glendale: cast iron bathtubs are on the not-accepted list, along with construction materials.
- Torrance: plumbing fixtures are grouped with construction debris and refused.
- Temple City, Glendora and West Hollywood (Athens Services): construction and demolition debris such as tile, drywall and rock is refused, so the tile and backer board from the same bathroom won't go out on the bulky pile.

Toilets and tubs in Orange County
Fountain Valley (Republic Services) is the clearest example: its bulky program lists remodeling items, naming vanity cabinets, sinks, toilets, bathtubs, windows and doors, as not accepted, and calls out cast iron tubs separately. Santa Ana refuses construction and demolition waste and any single item two workers can't handle, which can rule out a heavy tub. Newport Beach (CR&R) also limits items to what a two-person crew can manage. If your OC program doesn't name fixtures either way, ask before you set one at the curb.

2. Drop off fixtures with the remodel debris
Facilities don't usually list toilets or tubs by name. They list construction and demolition debris, which is what a bathroom tear-out produces. These sites accept C&D loads from the public:
- California Waste Services Downtown LA: construction and demolition debris, concrete and masonry, and metal and steel; open 24 hours, 7 days.
- Crown Recycling Services, Sun Valley: construction and demolition waste and scrap metal, open seven days.
- Downey Area Recycling and Transfer Station (Athens): C&D debris and garage clean-up loads.
- Puente Hills Materials Recovery Facility, City of Industry: construction and demolition waste, Monday through Saturday.
- Athens Irwindale MRF & Transfer Station: construction and demolition waste, weekdays and Saturday mornings.
- Republic Services Huntington Beach Transfer Station: self-haul construction and demolition debris and clean concrete.

3. Reuse a fixture that still works
A clean, uncracked toilet or a tub in good shape can sometimes go to a building-material reuse store or to someone doing their own remodel. Call first, since many only take items in working condition with all their parts. A stained or chipped fixture is waste.
4. Sell or give away
Vintage clawfoot tubs and matching sinks sometimes find buyers online; a standard toilet rarely does. If you list a free tub, say how much it weighs and where it sits, so the person picking it up brings enough help.
5. Hire a hauler
Roa Solution Junk Removal hauls bathroom remodel debris: tile and flooring, cabinets and countertops, drywall and the packaging from the new fixtures, plus the old toilet and sink once they're out. The crew loads it from the bathroom, garage or driveway pile and hauls it away.
Have the fixtures disconnected first; we don't do plumbing. A cast-iron tub is heavy, so text a photo of it and the path out and we'll tell you whether it's a job we take. Pricing starts at $190 and depends on truck space, weight and labor. Text photos to (562) 219-9266 for a price, with same-day or next-day pickup depending on availability.

What it usually costs
A toilet that your bulky program accepts is free within your allowance. Transfer stations charge for C&D loads and several don't publish rates, so call first. A hauler prices by truck space and weight from your photos, starting at $190; tile and a cast-iron tub weigh far more than their size suggests.
