How to Get Rid of Old Carpet in LA and Orange County

Guide · Nov 6, 2026

The short answer

Many LA County bulky pickups take old carpet if you cut it into short lengths, roll it and tie it. The City of LA, Bell, Downey, Paramount, Commerce, Pomona and Santa Clarita all list carpet. A few programs refuse it, and Torrance treats wall-to-wall carpet as construction debris. Area rugs are usually the easiest, since they roll up as one bulky item.

1. Roll and tie it for a bulky pickup

Carpet is one of the few remodel leftovers that many bulky programs accept, as long as it's prepared their way. The rules from LA County program pages:

  • City of Los Angeles (LASAN): rolled and tied carpet is on the accepted list, with unlimited free pickups for homes on City service.
  • Bell: carpet rolled and tied, on the city's monthly month-end bulky collection dates.
  • Pomona (Athens Services): carpet cut into 4-ft lengths and rolled no thicker than 18 inches across.
  • Santa Clarita (Burrtec): carpet cut in 4-ft rolls.
  • Commerce (Athens Services): carpet bundles up to 6 ft long and under 50 lb.
  • Paramount: carpet is on the accepted list, free, up to 5 items per pickup.
  • Downey: carpet is listed alongside furniture and mattresses, up to 5 items per pickup.

Programs that refuse carpet, and a few generous ones

Check before you tear out a whole room. A few programs exclude carpet, and others are generous with rugs:

  • Torrance: lists wall-to-wall carpet with construction debris, which its Large Item Pick Up doesn't take.
  • Hidden Hills: carpet is on the excluded list.
  • Redondo Beach (Athens Services): rug bundles up to 4 ft, within 4 free items a week.
  • Hacienda Heights (Valley Vista Services): rugs are listed as unlimited large items on up to 8 free pickups a year.
  • Inglewood (Republic Services): rugs are accepted on unlimited free pickups.

Carpet and rugs in Orange County

The OC program pages we checked rarely mention carpet. Fountain Valley (Republic Services) takes area rugs rolled to 6 ft or less on its 4 pickups a year, but excludes remodeling items and construction and demolition waste. Santa Ana and Mission Viejo also exclude construction and demolition waste, so a full tear-out may not qualify. Ask your hauler how wall-to-wall carpet is treated before you book.

2. Drop it off

None of the official facility pages we checked list carpet by name, so call before you load it. The transfer stations that take household trash or construction and demolition waste from the public are the ones to ask: DART in Downey, Athens Irwindale MRF, Puente Hills MRF in the City of Industry, Crown Recycling in Sun Valley, and the Republic Services Huntington Beach Transfer Station in OC. Wet carpet weighs a lot more, so keep it dry.

3. Donate or sell rugs

Wall-to-wall carpet that's been pulled up rarely has a second use, but a clean area rug or runner can. Wool, vintage or handmade rugs are worth listing for sale. Ordinary rugs in good shape can go to a donation center that accepts home goods; call first.

4. Have it hauled away

Roa Solution Junk Removal hauls away old carpet, padding, vinyl, laminate and tile from homes and rentals. If it's still down, tell us when you send photos and pulling it up is priced in. Rolled and cut carpet takes less truck space, so it can cost less.

We cover all of LA County, and Orange County except San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano. Pricing starts at $190, with same-day or next-day pickup depending on availability. Text photos to (562) 219-9266.

What it usually costs

Rolled carpet on a bulky pickup is free within your city's allowance where it's accepted. Transfer stations charge by weight. A hauled load is priced by truck space, weight and the carry from the house, starting at $190.

Questions

How do I prepare carpet for bulky pickup?

Cut it to your city's length, roll it and tie it. Pomona and Santa Clarita want 4-ft rolls, Commerce allows bundles up to 6 ft and under 50 lb, and LASAN asks for rolled and tied carpet.

Does carpet pad go with the carpet?

The program pages we checked don't mention pad separately. Roll it with the carpet or bag it, and list it when you book.

Is carpet construction debris?

In Torrance, wall-to-wall carpet is listed with construction debris and isn't taken on Large Item Pick Up. Many other LA County cities accept rolled carpet as a bulky item.

Do you take old carpet?

Yes. We haul away carpet, padding and other flooring, and pull it up first if it's still down. Show in your photos whether it's already up and rolled.
