How to Get Rid of Old Tires in LA and Orange County

Guide · Nov 6, 2026

The short answer

Many LA and Orange County bulky pickups refuse tires, but a handful take a few at a time: Pasadena takes two, Walnut up to four, and Long Beach up to five small ones per pickup. Many landfills and transfer stations in LA County list whole tires as not accepted, so check the rules before you load them. If you're buying new tires anyway, ask the shop to keep the old ones.

1. See if your city's bulky pickup takes tires

Tires are where bulky programs disagree the most. Some take a small number, many lump them in with auto parts and refuse them.

Programs that take tires, with their limits:

  • Pasadena: two tires are on the accepted list for single-family bulky pickups, 2 free a year.
  • Walnut (Valley Vista Services): up to 4 tires, no rims and no truck or tractor tires, on unlimited free pickups.
  • Long Beach: up to 5 tires per pickup, 16 inches or smaller. The city may charge a regulatory fee for tires.
  • Santa Clarita (Burrtec): tires are on the accepted list, within 4 pickups a year of 3 large items.
  • Artesia (CR&R): the city lists tires among collected items.

Programs that won't take tires

If your city is on this list, the bulky truck will leave tires at the curb:

  • LA County: Cerritos, Commerce, Irwindale, San Fernando, Covina, San Dimas and Hidden Hills exclude tires. Pico Rivera excludes truck and automobile tires, and Redondo Beach and Torrance exclude them as auto parts.
  • Orange County: Buena Park and La Palma (EDCO) exclude tires, and Santa Ana (Republic Services) excludes tires and car bodies.
  • City of Los Angeles (LASAN): excludes automotive parts. Its page doesn't name tires either way, so ask when you book on MyLA311.

2. Drop tires off yourself

This is where the data gets thin. Many disposal sites list tires as not accepted on their official pages:

  • Sunshine Canyon Landfill and Puente Hills MRF: whole tires are not accepted.
  • CLARTS, California Waste Services Downtown LA and Savage Canyon Landfill: tires are not accepted.
  • Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha landfills list tires as not accepted and tell customers to check with CalRecycle.
  • Republic Services Huntington Beach Transfer Station: takes tires for a fee per tire.

3. Ask the tire shop

If you're replacing tires soon, ask the shop whether it keeps the old ones as part of the job. It saves you a trip. If you only have old tires to get rid of, call a shop and ask whether it takes them and what it charges before you drive over.

4. Sell or give away usable tires

Tires with good tread, or a set still on rims, can find a buyer online. List the size printed on the sidewall, the tread depth and the age. Bald or cracked tires won't sell.

5. Ask a hauler

If the tires are part of a bigger garage or yard cleanout, text us photos and we'll tell you whether it's a job we take. Roa Solution Junk Removal hauls household junk, garage contents and yard debris across all of LA County, and Orange County except San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano, starting at $190, with same-day or next-day pickup depending on availability. Text (562) 219-9266.

What it usually costs

City bulky pickups that take tires are free within the limits, though Long Beach may add a regulatory fee. The Huntington Beach transfer station charges for tires. For a mixed load of garage or yard junk, see how hauling is priced.

Questions

Can I put old tires in my trash cart?

Check with your hauler first. Many bulky programs exclude tires outright, so use a program that takes them, a tire shop, or a facility that accepts them.

Will the bulky pickup take tires on rims?

Walnut says no rims. The other bulky pages we checked don't say, so mention the rims when you book.

Does Sunshine Canyon Landfill take tires?

Not whole tires. Sunshine Canyon lists whole tires as not accepted, and so does the Puente Hills MRF.

Do you take tires?

Text us photos and we'll tell you whether it's a job we take. It depends on the number and what else is going in the load.
