The short answer
Old paint, solvents, pesticides and pool chemicals are household hazardous waste, so they don't go in your trash, on a bulky pickup, or in a junk hauler's truck. In LA County, take them free to an LA S.A.F.E. Center, the EDCO center in Signal Hill, or a county collection event. In Orange County, use one of the four free OC Waste & Recycling HHW centers. Some cities also offer door-side pickup.

Why bulky pickup and haulers won't take it
Most city bulky programs that publish an excluded list name hazardous waste, and many name paint outright. Roa Solution Junk Removal doesn't take it either: we don't handle paint, chemicals, solvents, asbestos, medical waste or propane tanks.
A few examples of how programs word it:
- City of Los Angeles (LASAN): excludes paints, solvents and chemicals, and tells residents to take hazardous materials to S.A.F.E. Centers.
- Commerce (Athens Services): excludes motor oil, filters, brake fluid, paint, thinner, solvents, pesticides, batteries and pool chemicals.
- Whittier (Athens Services): excludes antifreeze, automotive fluids, cleaners, gas cylinders, pesticides, paint, pharmaceuticals, pool chemicals and solvents.
- Buena Park and La Palma (EDCO): exclude paints, thinners, solvents, pesticides and liquid wastes.

2. Drop it off in LA County
LA's S.A.F.E. Centers take paint, stains, solvents, household cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, used motor oil, propane cylinders, aerosols, batteries and fluorescent bulbs. They're free for City of LA and LA County residents. The limit is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit, staff unload while you stay in your car, and they'll ask the address the waste came from.
Where they are:
- LA-Glendale S.A.F.E. Center, Atwater Village: Saturdays 9 am to 3 pm. State photo ID required at the gate.
- Washington Boulevard (Los Angeles), Randall Street (Sun Valley), Gaffey Street (San Pedro), Nicole Bernson (Northridge) and Hyperion (Playa del Rey): Saturdays and Sundays, 9 am to 3 pm.
- S.A.F.E. Center at UCLA, Westwood: Fridays, Saturdays and the first Sunday of each month.
- All S.A.F.E. Centers close for winter from December 24 to January 3.
- EDCO Environmental Collection Center, Signal Hill: an LA County permanent HHW center open on scheduled Saturdays.
- LA County HHW and e-waste roundups: free one-day events that rotate through cities. Check the CleanLA calendar for dates.

Drop it off in Orange County
OC Waste & Recycling runs four free HHW collection centers for Orange County residents, open Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 3 pm, and closed on major holidays and in rainy weather. They take paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, smoke detectors and pesticides.
The rules: up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle per trip, no containers larger than five gallons, and materials in their original, lidded, labeled containers where possible. Proof of OC residence may be requested, and waste from businesses, churches, schools or nonprofits isn't accepted.

3. Give usable paint away
Unopened or nearly full cans of paint, stain or sealer can be useful to a neighbor, a community group or someone finishing a project. Offer them on a neighborhood app before you make the trip. Anything leaking, unlabeled or rusted goes to the HHW center.
4. Clear the rest with a hauler
Paint cans usually turn up in the middle of a garage or a move-out. Set the hazardous items aside for the HHW center, and we can take everything else in the same space: shelving, boxes, old furniture, tools, yard junk. Pricing starts at $190, and same-day or next-day pickup depends on availability. Text photos to (562) 219-9266 and point out anything you've set aside.

What it usually costs
Dropping off household hazardous waste is free for residents at the LA and OC centers. Business waste is different: LA's S.A.F.E. Centers take it only through a paid program by appointment at certain centers. If you're also clearing junk, see how hauling is priced.
