How to Get Rid of a BBQ Grill and Propane Tanks in LA and OC

Guide · Nov 6, 2026

The short answer

Get rid of the grill and the propane tank separately. In LA and Orange County, an old BBQ grill can usually go out on your city's bulky pickup or with a hauler, but only with the tank removed. Propane tanks and cylinders are hazardous: take them to a household hazardous waste center, like LA's S.A.F.E. Centers, which list propane cylinders as accepted.

1. Put the grill out for bulky pickup (without the tank)

Grills are a common bulky item. Tanks are the deal-breaker, and programs spell that out:

  • Pasadena: barbecues and lawn furniture are on the accepted list for single-family homes, 2 free pickups a year by appointment.
  • Commerce (Athens Services): BBQs are accepted without tanks, with weekly eligibility and no annual cap stated.
  • Whittier (Athens Services): excludes gas cylinders along with other hazardous waste, on 4 free pickups a year of up to 3 items.
  • San Fernando (Republic Services): propane tanks are on the excluded list.
  • City of Los Angeles (LASAN): unlimited free bulky pickups, but hazardous materials go to S.A.F.E. Centers instead.

Grill pickup in Orange County

The OC program pages we checked don't name grills, so treat a grill like any other bulky item and leave the tank off. Rossmoor (CR&R) gives 2 free pickups a year of up to 4 items, booked 24 hours before your service day. Huntington Beach (Republic Services) gives 4 pickups of up to 10 items for cart-service homes. Laguna Hills (CR&R) offers 2 bulky pickups plus a separate free doorstep pickup for hazardous waste, 2 a year, which is worth asking about for an old tank.

2. Take the propane tank to a hazardous waste center

Propane tanks don't belong on a bulky pickup, and we don't take them either. California Waste Services in Downtown LA, for example, lists propane tanks as not accepted. Where they can go:

  • LA S.A.F.E. Centers: propane cylinders are on the accepted list, free for City of LA and LA County residents, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit. Centers include LA-Glendale (Atwater Village), Washington Boulevard, Randall Street (Sun Valley), Gaffey Street (San Pedro), Nicole Bernson (Northridge), Hyperion (Playa del Rey) and UCLA.
  • LA County's free HHW and e-waste roundup events take household hazardous waste from LA County residents. Dates and locations rotate, so check the CleanLA calendar and ask about propane before you bring a tank.
  • Orange County: OC Waste & Recycling runs four free HHW centers in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine and at Prima Deshecha, Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 3 pm. Their published list doesn't name propane, so call (714) 834-4000 before you bring a tank.

3. Drop the grill off as scrap metal

A grill with the tank removed is mostly metal. Crown Recycling Services in Sun Valley lists scrap metal and takes drop-offs seven days a week, and California Waste Services Downtown LA lists metal and steel. Puente Hills MRF and Athens Irwindale MRF take residential trash from the public. Empty out ash and charcoal before you go.

4. Sell or give away a working grill

A clean gas grill that lights, or a solid charcoal kettle, often gets picked up the same day it's listed free. Mention the brand, whether it's gas or charcoal, and whether a tank is included. If you're keeping the tank, say so.

5. Have the grill hauled with your yard junk

Roa Solution Junk Removal hauls old BBQ grills and patio furniture, usually along with whatever else is crowding the backyard: branches, broken chairs, old fencing. The crew carries it out of the yard, loads it and cleans up. Same-day or next-day pickup depending on availability.

Take the propane tank off first and keep it out of the load. We don't take propane tanks, gas cylinders or other hazardous waste. Pricing starts at $190. Text a photo to (562) 219-9266.

What it usually costs

Bulky pickup and S.A.F.E. Center drop-off are free for residents. Transfer sites charge by weight, often with a minimum. A single grill hauled away still meets the $190 starting minimum, so it makes the most sense alongside other yard or patio junk.
