How to Get Rid of an Old Shed in LA and Orange County

Guide · Nov 6, 2026

The short answer

To get rid of a shed in LA or Orange County, you either take it apart and haul the pieces to a facility that accepts wood, metal and construction debris, or have someone break it down and haul it for you. City bulky pickups take very little of a shed: many exclude loose lumber and building material, and the few that take wood want it cut and bundled small.

Want it handled for you? See our shed removal service.

1. What city bulky pickup will take

A shed isn't a bulky item; once it's down it's a pile of building material. A few programs take some of it if you cut it to size:

  • City of Los Angeles (LASAN): large wood pieces and doors are on the accepted list, but construction materials are not. Unlimited free pickups for homes on City service.
  • Pasadena: bundled wood up to 3 feet and fence material are accepted on its 2 free pickups a year. Construction materials are not.
  • Carson and Hawaiian Gardens (WM): scrap wood is on the accepted list.
  • Culver City: lumber and pipes must be bundled no thicker than 4 inches and no longer than 5 ft.

Programs that exclude shed debris

Many programs specifically exclude the materials a shed is made of:

  • Athens Services cities, including Whittier, Norwalk, Temple City and West Hollywood: exclude loose building material and lumber.
  • Paramount: wood is on its accepted list, but lumber is on its not-accepted list.
  • Lakewood (EDCO): excludes building materials such as lumber and roofing.
  • Torrance: excludes construction debris, including wood.
  • Orange County: Santa Ana, Mission Viejo, Laguna Woods and Fountain Valley exclude construction and demolition waste, and Costa Mesa limits wood and yard debris to 1 cubic yard per pickup.

2. Haul the pieces to a facility

Once the shed is down, sort it if you can: wood in one pile, metal panels and roofing in another, trash and contents in a third. These sites list the materials on their official pages:

  • California Waste Services Downtown LA: wood and lumber, metal and steel, construction and demolition waste, and asphalt shingles in mixed C&D loads. Open 24 hours.
  • Crown Recycling Services, Sun Valley: wood, scrap metal and construction and demolition waste, open seven days.
  • Athens Irwindale MRF and DART (Downey): construction and demolition waste, open to the public with no residency rule stated.
  • Puente Hills MRF, City of Industry: construction and demolition waste. It doesn't accept treated wood.
  • Republic Services Huntington Beach Transfer Station: self-haul construction and demolition debris and trash.

3. Sell it or give it away whole

A metal or resin shed in decent shape, or a wood shed built on skids, can be worth something to someone who'll take it apart and rebuild it. List it free or cheap with the dimensions and photos, and make clear the taker does the disassembly and hauling. Empty it first.

4. Have it broken down and hauled away

Taking a shed down means roofing, rusted screws, glass, and whatever has been living under the floor. Most people are glad to hand it off.

Roa Solution Junk Removal takes down wood, metal, aluminum and plastic or resin sheds, carries the pieces out, hauls everything away and cleans up the spot. We clear what's stored inside on the same trip. Sheds are priced from photos, and pricing starts at $190. Same-day or next-day pickup when the schedule allows.

If the shed sits on a concrete slab or foundation, include it in your photos and we'll tell you what's possible. Anything hazardous inside, like old paint, fuel or pesticides, stays out of the load. Text photos to (562) 219-9266.

What it usually costs

Self-haul means paying by weight at the scale, and California Waste Services and the Huntington Beach Transfer Station both charge a one-ton minimum, plus a truck and your weekend. Our price depends on the shed's size and material, what's inside, access to the backyard, and whether there's a slab. Pricing starts at $190.
