The short answer
To get rid of a treadmill or other exercise equipment in LA or Orange County, check your city's bulky-item pickup first, but watch the weight limits: several programs cap items at 50 to 150 pounds or at what two people can carry. Working equipment sells or gets claimed fast. For heavy machines in a garage, spare room or upstairs, a hauler can take them apart and carry them out.

1. City bulky pickup: watch the weight limits
Exercise machines are mostly steel and motor, and that's what trips up bulky programs. Few lists name exercise gear, but many set weight or size caps a treadmill can exceed.
From LA County program pages:
- Diamond Bar (Valley Vista Services): one of the few that names it. The city's page lists large exercise equipment as eligible, with 4 free pickups a year of up to 4 items. The page's item lists don't fully agree, so confirm with Valley Vista when you book.
- Rosemead (Republic Services): each item has to be 50 lb or less and no bigger than 4 by 4 by 6 ft.
- Pomona and Azusa (Athens Services): items over 60 lb or larger than 4 by 8 ft are not accepted.
- Huntington Park (Valley Vista Services): items must be under 150 lb and no bigger than 8 by 4 ft.
- Claremont (city crews): 3 free loads a year, with a weight limit of what one man can easily handle.
- Gardena (WM): WM's 2026 guide allows up to 3 cubic yards per pickup, but the city's February 2025 FAQ says 2 large items or 300 lb, so confirm with WM.

Exercise equipment pickup in Orange County
OC pages don't name exercise equipment either, so the size and crew rules decide it:
- Costa Mesa Sanitary District: 3 pickups a year of up to 10 items; nothing over 150 lb or larger than 8 by 4 ft.
- Huntington Beach (Republic Services): 4 pickups a year of up to 10 items for cart-service homes, and the city doesn't pick up from private property.
- Buena Park (EDCO): 3 pickups a year of up to six bulky items set at the curb next to your carts. Call at least two days before trash day.
- Cypress (Valley Vista Services): anything with a circuit board or battery counts as e-waste, can't go in carts and is collected separately. Ask how a powered treadmill is handled when you book.

2. Drop it off as scrap metal or trash
A weight bench, squat rack or dumbbell set is mostly metal. A treadmill or elliptical adds a motor, a console and a belt. A few facilities list the materials:
- Crown Recycling Services, Sun Valley: lists scrap metal and general trash, and is open seven days.
- California Waste Services Downtown LA: lists metal and steel, open 24 hours.
- Athens Irwindale MRF: open to residents and the general public for trash, with no residency rule stated.
- The facility pages we checked don't name exercise equipment, so call ahead about motorized machines.

3. Donate it
Some donation centers take working fitness gear, and some refuse anything motorized. Call first, and have the brand, model and a note on whether it powers on. Free weights and benches are the easiest to donate.
4. Sell it or give it away
Home gym gear is one of the easiest things to sell used. Post it with the model, photos of the console lit up, and the dimensions. Tell buyers it needs to come out of the garage or upstairs room, and whether it folds.
5. Hire a hauler
Treadmills and home gyms tend to end up in the hardest places to get them out of: an upstairs bedroom, a back garage corner, a condo with a narrow stairwell.
Roa Solution Junk Removal carries out treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, weight benches, racks and home gyms, and hauls them away. When it helps, the crew breaks big machines down so they take less space in the truck, which means you pay for less space. Same-day or next-day pickup depending on availability.
Pricing starts at $190. Text a photo of the equipment and where it sits to (562) 219-9266.

What it usually costs
City pickup is free when your machine fits the limits. A hauler prices by truck space, weight, stairs and labor. One treadmill still meets the $190 starting minimum, and adding the bench and the dumbbells to the same trip uses the visit better.
