The short answer
The cheapest way to get rid of a couch in LA or Orange County is your city's bulky-item pickup. City of LA homes on LASAN service can book unlimited free pickups, and most Orange County programs we checked allow 2 to 4 free pickups a year. If you can't get the couch to the curb, need it gone soon, or have used up your pickups, hire a hauler to carry it out.

1. Book a free bulky-item pickup (LA County)
Almost every city program takes a couch. The catch is the rules: how many pickups you get, how many items count, and whether the crew touches anything that isn't at the curb.
A few LA County examples from official pages:
- City of Los Angeles (LASAN): unlimited curbside bulky pickups at no extra charge for homes on City trash service, generally up to 4 units. Book on MyLA311 or at 1-800-773-2489 at least one business day before your trash day, and have an itemized list ready. Larger apartment buildings use RecycLA franchise haulers instead.
- Huntington Park (Valley Vista Services): up to 4 items per pickup, once a week. The city's own example is 2 couches, 1 fridge and 1 TV. Each item must be under 150 lb and no bigger than 8 ft by 4 ft.
- Carson (WM): 4 free pickups a year of up to 5 items, and sofas are on the accepted list. Items that need more than two people to lift are excluded.
- Diamond Bar (Valley Vista Services): 4 pickups a year of up to 4 items, and couches are named as eligible.
- Long Beach: up to 12 special collections a year, 8 large items each, with items no larger than 72 by 48 inches. City crews can't go onto private property.

Couch pickup rules in Orange County
OC cities are stricter on numbers, so a couch can use up a good share of your yearly allowance. What the official pages say:
- Huntington Beach (Republic Services): 4 free pickups a year of up to 10 items for homes with cart service. The city doesn't pick up bulky items from private property, so the couch has to be at the curb.
- Newport Beach (CR&R): a set number of free pickups a year, up to 5 items each. Items must be manageable by a two-person crew. Confirm your count with CR&R when you book.
- Santa Ana (Republic Services): 4 pickups a year of up to 4 items, collected within five working days after you ask.
- Westminster and Midway City (Midway City Sanitary District): 2 items every 30 days, booked at least a week ahead.
- Unincorporated OC, such as Ladera Ranch, Rossmoor and North Tustin: the county rule is 2 free pickups per calendar year, up to 4 items each.

2. Haul it to a transfer station yourself
If you have a truck and a helper, you can take a couch to a transfer station that accepts household trash. Expect a weight-based fee with a minimum charge.
Facilities whose official pages cover furniture or household bulky waste:
- DART (Downey Area Recycling and Transfer Station), Downey: lists garage clean-up and furniture, and is open to the public with no residency rule stated.
- California Waste Services Downtown LA: advertises a public dump that takes furniture, open 24 hours.
- CLARTS, Los Angeles: takes bulky items, but only from City of LA residents and commercial haulers. Bring your own hard hat and safety vest.
- Puente Hills MRF, City of Industry: takes residential self-haul loads. Safety vests are required and unloading is capped at 30 minutes.
- Republic Services Huntington Beach Transfer Station: the city calls it the public dump for self-haul trash. Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha landfills only take waste from Orange County, with proof of origin, so check OC Waste & Recycling's updates page before you drive out to either one.

3. Donate it if it's in good shape
A clean couch with no rips, stains, pet damage or odor has a chance at a second life. Thrift stores and charities are picky about upholstered furniture, so send a photo or call before you load it up.
Culver City's bulky page makes the point plainly: furniture it collects is landfilled, so the city suggests donating usable pieces first.

4. Sell it or give it away
A decent couch listed free on a neighborhood app or marketplace often goes within a day, as long as the buyer brings help and a truck. Take clear photos, give the measurements, and say up front that they need to carry it out.
5. Hire a hauler to carry it out
A hauler makes sense when the couch is upstairs or behind a narrow doorway, when you need it gone today or tomorrow, or when you've used your free pickups. City crews only take what's at the curb. We come inside.
Roa Solution Junk Removal carries couches, loveseats, sectionals and recliners out from wherever they sit, loads them and cleans up. When it makes sense, the crew breaks a big piece down so it takes less truck space, which keeps the price down. Same-day or next-day pickup depending on availability.
Pricing starts at $190. Text a photo of the couch and tell us the floor it's on to (562) 219-9266 and you'll get a price back by text.

What it usually costs
City bulky pickup is free within your allowance. Self-haul costs a dump fee plus your time and a vehicle. A hauler's price depends on truck space, weight, access and labor, and a single couch still meets the $190 starting minimum. A sectional from a second floor costs more than a loveseat from the garage.
