How to Get Rid of a Washer and Dryer in LA and Orange County

Guide · Nov 6, 2026

The short answer

A washer and dryer count as two bulky items, and many LA and Orange County city programs take both for free on a scheduled pickup. Disconnect them from water, gas and power first, and check how many items your city allows per pickup. If they're in a basement, a closet or a second-floor laundry room, a hauler is usually easier.

1. Use your city's bulky pickup in LA County

Washers and dryers show up on many accepted lists. The two things to watch are the item count, since a pair uses two slots, and the weight and size limits some programs set.

Examples from LA County program pages:

  • Commerce (Athens Services): washers and dryers are named on the accepted list, with weekly eligibility and no annual cap stated. Book at least 24 hours before collection day.
  • Lomita (Athens Services): washers and dryers are accepted; single-family homes get 4 free on-call pickups of up to 6 items a year, and multifamily units get 1.
  • La Mirada (EDCO): unlimited free pickups of furniture and major appliances for single-family homes, with 24 hours' notice.
  • Cerritos (Athens Services): free pickups of up to 5 items per request, at least 24 hours before trash day, with items out by 7 am.
  • Pomona (Athens Services): 6 free pickups a year for single-family homes, but nothing over 60 lb or bigger than 4 by 8 ft is accepted, which can rule out a heavy front-loader.
  • City of Los Angeles (LASAN): unlimited free pickups for homes on City service, but commercial appliances are excluded.

Washer and dryer pickup in Orange County

In OC, item limits matter more than the item type. A pair of machines takes half of a 4-item pickup:

  • Mission Viejo (WM): 3 pickups a year of up to 5 large items, booked 48 hours before collection day.
  • Rancho Santa Margarita (CR&R): 4 pickups a year of up to 4 items.
  • Fountain Valley (Republic Services): 4 pickups a year of up to 10 items for residential customers.
  • Los Alamitos (UWS): free quarterly pickups, up to four items each.
  • La Palma (EDCO): just 2 items once a year, the lowest allowance in the OC data. A washer and dryer would use all of it.
  • Laguna Hills (CR&R): offers a separate white goods collection for appliances, apart from its 2 bulky pickups a year.

2. Drop them off yourself

Washers and dryers are mostly metal, and a few facilities list appliances or scrap metal:

  • Sunshine Canyon Landfill, Sylmar: accepts appliances for recycling only, with a hard-to-handle charge. LA County's Origin Report Form is required, and you need a vest, hard hat and work shoes outside your vehicle.
  • Crown Recycling Services, Sun Valley: lists scrap metal and markets drop-off to people clearing out a home. Open seven days.
  • California Waste Services Downtown LA: takes appliances with restrictions, plus metal and steel.
  • CLARTS and Savage Canyon do not take appliances. In OC, the facility pages we checked don't list washers or dryers by name, so call first.

3. Donate a working set

A matched pair that still runs is worth offering to a donation center or a family that needs one. Not every thrift store takes large appliances, so call first and be ready to say the age and that both machines work.

4. Sell them or give them away

Used washers and dryers move fast online, especially as a set. Mention gas or electric for the dryer and the hookups needed. If you're buying new, ask the retailer whether it hauls the old machines away at delivery.

5. Hire a hauler

Laundry machines live in garages, hall closets and upstairs laundry rooms, and getting a front-loader down a staircase is a two-person job with a dolly. City bulky programs pick up at the curb.

Roa Solution Junk Removal carries washers and dryers out, loads them and hauls them away, along with anything else from the garage. Have them unplugged and disconnected from water and gas before we arrive; we don't do the plumbing or gas work. Same-day or next-day pickup depending on availability.

Pricing starts at $190. Text a photo of the machines and where they sit to (562) 219-9266.

What it usually costs

City pickup is free within your allowance. A hauler prices by truck space, weight, stairs and labor, so a pair from a second-floor laundry room costs more than one machine from the garage. Pricing starts at $190.

Questions

Does a washer and dryer count as one bulky item or two?

Plan on two: each machine is one item, so a pair uses two of your per-pickup slots. In La Palma, with 2 items once a year, it uses the whole allowance.

Do I need to disconnect the dryer gas line myself?

Yes, or have a plumber do it. We don't disconnect gas or water lines. Have the gas line capped properly before anyone moves the dryer.

Will the bulky crew take a stacked washer-dryer unit?

It depends on your program's limits. It has to be at the curb, and Pomona caps items at 60 lb and Costa Mesa at 150 lb, so ask when you book.

Can you take the washer and dryer from my garage?

Yes. We take them from the garage, laundry room or upstairs, and can clear other garage junk on the same trip.
