The short answer
Start with the new home's floor plan, sort in short sessions with the person who's moving, let family claim items by a set date, and set paint and chemicals aside. Book the haul-out for whatever is left once the move is done. Pricing starts at $190, and a whole house gets an estimate first.
Want it handled for you? See our estate cleanout service.
1. Start with the new space
Downsizing goes easier when everyone can see what fits. Get the floor plan of the new apartment, condo or room, and measure the furniture your parent wants to bring.
Pick the pieces that matter most first: a favorite chair, the bed, a dresser, the dining table if there's room. Everything else is a decision, not a default.
2. Sort in short sessions
A whole house of decisions in one weekend wears anyone out. Work one room, or one closet, at a time. Stop before people get tired.
Let the person who's moving lead. They know what matters and why. Your job is to keep things moving and keep the piles labeled.
- Keep: going to the new home
- Family: claimed by a relative, labeled with their name
- Sell or give away: set aside with a pickup date
- Haul: everything else
3. Find papers and keepsakes before anything leaves
Pull papers, photos and keepsakes out first and keep them with you, not in the house. Check drawers, coat pockets, books, shoe boxes and the garage.
If there's something specific to look for, like a box of letters or a set of keys, tell us before the cleanout. We'll keep an eye out while we clear.
- IDs, insurance cards and medical paperwork
- Deeds, titles and bank or retirement statements
- Photos, letters and family records
- Spare keys and written-down passwords
4. Give family a date
Invite family to walk through and claim what they want, and set a deadline. Without one, a downsizing move drags on for months. Anything unclaimed by the date can be sold, given away or hauled.
5. Set aside paint and chemicals
Garages tend to collect half-used paint, pesticides and cleaning products. We don't take hazardous waste: paint, chemicals, solvents, asbestos, medical waste or propane tanks.
In Los Angeles County, the City of LA's S.A.F.E. Centers take household hazardous waste and e-waste free from City of LA and LA County residents.
In Orange County, OC residents can use the County's four household hazardous waste centers free, Tuesday through Saturday, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds a trip.

6. City pickup or a crew?
City bulky item pickup collects from the curb on the city's schedule. In the City of LA, LASAN's bulky pickup is unlimited and free for homes on its service; book at least one business day before your regular collection day. In Mission Viejo, WM picks up as many as five large items, three times a year, on your regular trash day.
If nobody can carry a sofa or a mattress down the stairs, a crew is the easier route. We carry items out from inside, upstairs, the garage or the yard, and loading, hauling and cleanup are included.

7. The final cleanout
Most families do the haul-out after the move, once the keepers are in the new place. That way nothing that matters gets mixed in by mistake.
Text photos of each room, the garage and the yard to (562) 219-9266. Pricing starts at $190 and depends on truck space, the type of material, weight, access and labor. A whole house gets an estimate first, from photos or an on-site visit.
If the house is going on the market, tell us the listing date so we can plan around cleaning and photos.
If family lives out of town
You don't always have to be there. If we have clear access, instructions and payment arranged, we may be able to do the job without you on site. We take cash, check, credit or debit, Zelle, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, PayPal and Cash App, so payment is easy from anywhere.
