Republic Services hauls bulky items in Garden Grove by appointment only: up to three pickups per calendar year for single- and multi-family households, with as many as 10 items each time. Call Republic at (714) 238-3300.

The City’s FAQ names furniture, stoves, water heaters and large tree trunks as typical bulky pieces. In an apartment complex, the property manager picks where items go out.

A fourth appointment this year, an eleventh piece, or a fridge that has to come out of the kitchen first: that’s the work we pick up.

Couches, mattresses or other large items left in a City-owned alley or right of way: Public Works, (714) 741-5375, arranges removal with Republic. When it’s on private property, Code Enforcement tells the owner, who has to clear it. Hazardous dumping into a storm drain is a 911 call, followed by Environmental Compliance at (714) 741-5956.

What Garden Grove is like to work in

In the 1950s and ’60s Garden Grove went from farmland to what the City calls “predominantly single family homes and neighborhood commercial centers.”

Trash service runs through the Garden Grove Sanitary District, with the City Council sitting as its board.

Plenty of blocks back onto alleys, and the City clears bulky items dumped in the ones it owns.

City programs

Six free Community Cleanup Days a year, every other month from 9 to 11 a.m. at rotating sites: bring bulky items, appliances without refrigerant, mattresses, carpet, e-waste, scrap metal and green waste with limbs cut to 4 ft. Every event shreds up to four boxes of paper and collects household batteries.

Not taken at the events: hazardous waste, concrete, dirt, rocks, brick, asphalt, sand, treated wood, tires, palm fronds and anything with refrigerant. The 2025 events brought in more than 33 tons of e-waste and 44 tons of bulky items.
